In a hotel parking lot,
down by the ferry dock
the reveries are interrupted only briefly
as their children bring them dinner
and necessities of trade

Back at home the chores pile up like stumbling blocks
time presuming, time consuming
and the baby sitter shines a beacon in the corner
teaching sugar bread ambitions
through endless summer nights.

The summer bakes it's leaven bread
That's broken at no table
For if a mamma is to pay the rent
then clearly she's unable
to return home at a whim
to a home that has no him
and surely will not have one
for a long time.

Back at home the chores pile up like stumbling blocks

Television -
which we really can't afford to keep connected
Shows us sparkling pictures daily
of what a mother really ought to be


The heat is bad for business
It draws customers away
and parched throats and hungry eyes
chew on food that tastes like
sawdust laced with pork,
gasoline and rolled in dust
as their hazy prospect rust
